The Panchang is the traditional Vedic almanac used to choose auspicious times for important events. The word means ‘five limbs’, and each limb measures a different rhythm of the day.
The five limbs
- Tithi — the lunar day, based on the angle between the Sun and Moon.
- Nakshatra — the lunar mansion, one of twenty-seven star groups the Moon travels through.
- Yoga — a combination of solar and lunar longitudes.
- Karana — half of a Tithi.
- Vaara — the weekday.
Why it matters
Together these tell you the quality of a moment — when to begin a journey, hold a ceremony, or start something new. Many families still check the Panchang before weddings, housewarmings, and festivals.
