How to Read Your Birth Chart: A Beginner's Guide

Your birth chart, or Kundali, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It is the starting point of every Vedic reading, and once you learn to read it, the symbols start to tell a clear story.

The twelve houses

The chart is divided into twelve houses. Each house governs a part of life — the first for the self, the seventh for partnership, the tenth for career, and so on. The sign and planets sitting in a house colour how that area unfolds.

The planets

Each planet carries a quality. The Sun speaks to the soul and vitality, the Moon to the mind and emotions, Mars to drive, and Jupiter to wisdom and growth. Where a planet sits, and the house it rules, shapes its effect.

Where to begin

  • Find your Ascendant (Lagna) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth.
  • Note the Moon sign, which guides much of Vedic prediction.
  • Look at which planets are strong and which are challenged.

Take it slowly. A chart is read in layers, and each pass reveals a little more. When you are ready for a full personalised reading, our astrologers can walk you through yours.
